What does HP do?

From an article in the Register:

The CEO of Computacenter asks, "If you look at it, what do they [HP] do? What's their job? The software is made by Microsoft, Intel make the processors, that's where the value is. They don't make hard drives. They don't make the memory chips and they don't make the tin [the casing] itself. They certainly don't assemble themselves. What is it that HP do?"

HP's reply? "HP does not disclose information about its operations or business partner organizations. This information is company confidential and is a matter for HP and its channel partners."

I still like their laser printers. I've had two Laserjets so far.

They innovate. Look at how they've come up with a scheme to charge $35 for about a nickels worth of ink. :)

The old HP was known for making innovative, solidly-built products. Nobody makes calculators like HP. I still use my HP48GX calculator for stuff even when I have my computer near by. It has every little tool I'd ever need accessible within it's stack-based RPN language, and I can quickly create new functions on the fly.

Happy St Patrick's Day!
