The juice is loose

It's rather annoying, I go to the supermarket and about 2/3rds of the "juice" they have for sale isn't pure juice, it's a little bit of juice mixed with water and sugar high fructose corn syrup.  Some brands are as low as 1% juice!

And even when you do find something that's 100% juice, chances are it's not 100% of the kind of juice on the front label.  Recently I saw a bottle of 100% "Pomegranate" juice, but according to the ingredients list, it's mostly apple or grape juice, pomegranates are third on the list.

Lately I've been trying to drink less soda and more fruit juice, but it's really difficult when the labels try so hard to be deceptive.  Although juice has about as many calories as soda, it also has vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, polyphenols and other important nutrients.  Since I have a bad habit of not eating as many vegetables as I should, I'm hoping a glass of apple juice a day will keep the doctor away.

For pomegranate juice, I go for either POM, or the imported stuff from Azerbijan. Odwalla also makes good juice blends, and are fairly rich in nootreeants.

I usually get Pom when I'm buying pomegranate juice, which isn't often because it's so insanely expensive.

Also, if you can (not sure if they're in season anymore) try for actual pomegranates. :D I bought six for $12 at Wal-Mart (only place I've seen them so far), they're also by POM and they're just awesome.

If you do buy them, don't worry about the seeds inside of the arils, they're not toxic and are a good source of fiber.

I've seen them at Sam's Club as well, and I've considered buying some. I've seen the Good Eats episode on pomegranates, so I know how to open them with minimum mess.

Ooh, I was wondering if Alton did a pomegranate episode...gonna have to track it down. =) Thanks for indirectly confirming it for me. X3

I don't really mind if the juice I drink is 100% some-other-kind-of-juice. It's still 100%. I'm buying for real juice quotient, not authenticity. If it tastes good, I'll drink it.

When I'm buying a juice for it's health benefits (like pomegranate), I'd rather get 100% of that particular juice, especially if they're charging the same amount for apple/grape/pomegranate as they do for pure pomegranate.

I agree with that sentiment. Where pomegranate is concerned, I can't drink it for too long. It's too intense-tasting for me, personally. I get sick of it after a few glasses and have to drink something else for a while.

flavonoids, polyphenols and other important? nutrients

The supposed health benefits of anti-oxidants are blown out of all proportion by their proponents.

I know how that is... Have to avoid anything with the words "beverage", "drink" or "cocktail" in it. I usually go with orange or grapefruit juice, occasionally grape juice. I don't mind the blends on random juice too much, though I usually don't get those.

In a related topic, also avoid any food with the word "american" in it.
