Breakfast Strata

4 Tblsp butter, melted
12 slices bread, cubed
1/2 pound ham, cubed or 1 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/2 pound cheese, shredded
6 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk

Grease 9x13 baking dish.  Pour melted butter into bottom of dish.  Place half of the cubed bred on top.  Cover with meat and cheese.  Top with remaining bread.  Combine eggs and milk and pour over bread, covering everything.  Cover and refrigerate overnight (at least 4 hours).

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

If you ate the whole thing yourself, yeah. It serves about 4-6 people as a meal in itself, more if you serve it with something else (fruit, oatmeal, etc).

Anything with eggs and bacon is going to be high in calories, but ideally you should be getting most of your daily calories in the morning. 1000 calories for breakfast, followed by a moderate lunch and a light dinner works out perfectly.

mmmmm :o) Do you recommend dried bread or fresh from the loaf?

I think you can use either, since it's going to soak up a lot of liquid. I used a loaf of white wheat bread I bought at Costco last weekend. It wasn't exactly fresh, but it wasn't stale, either.
