The Eyes Have it

Managed to get an appointment to see an eye doctor this afternoon.

Turns out I had an enormous corneal erosion covering most of the front of the eye. The doctor picked off the remaining dead cells, and put a contact lens bandage over it. She prescribed some antibiotics and some pain killers, and I go back in next Friday.

My eye isn't hurting anymore, though the contact lens is a bit irritating, but that should go away in a few days.

What caused the corneal erosion?

I suffer from Recurrent Corneal Erosion, a disease in which the outer layer of the cornea sloughs off at random. Normally the erosions are tiny and only painful for a few minutes, but this time it was much worse. Unfortunately, there's no real cure for R.C.E. It can last for years or go away on its own. The contact lens the doctor put in should help things grow back properly.

My eye is feeling better already. The pain is gone, and there's just a bit of irritation (from the contact lens). They'll probably leave the lens in for a month or so.
