Is it pronounced sub-mare-in-er or sub-marine-er?

The former was a comic book superguy. The latter is anyone who serves on a submarine.

I've always thought it was sub-mare-in-er, myself. A mariner travels upon the sea. A submariner travels under it.

Addendum: you might ask [livejournal.com profile] rabbitboy. He used to serve on a nuclear Navy submarine.
