SNAIL-mail would be optimistic

Once upon a time, Amazon.com was actually pretty good.  They could manage to get stuff shipped out in a matter of days, and it wasn't uncommon for them to give free upgrades to Express Mail.  But that was long ago.  Now it seems like they really don't care anymore.

I ordered some books, movies and music on December 13th.  Today I checked to see if they had an estimate when my stuff would arrive.

Shipping estimate: January 24, 2008 - February 18, 2008

Riiiight...

What were the items? If even a single item is not immediately available and you selected to group all items into one shipment, it will all go out only when the slowest one arrives.

I ordered 10 items total, all were listed as being "in stock" except two. They've already shipped 4 of the in stock items, they have one of the backordered items listed as shipping (by itself) in early January, and the remaining 4 in stock and 1 back ordered items shipping around February.

If they've already shipped some of the in stock items, why couldn't they have shipped all of them at once? Or ship them with the January item?

If they split them up and shipped some of one batch immediately that were in stock, but held up the in stock items in the other batch, then you're right, their decision tree isn't particularly transparent.

They do well if the item is "in stock" but if it takes a special order or has to be shipped by an outside company, forget it.

Sounds better than my first experience with Amazon.com. It took them almost two months of them claiming they never received the check I mailed them until they finally fessed up that something was wrong and fixed it.
