Once upon a time, Amazon.com was actually pretty good.  They could manage to get stuff shipped out in a matter of days, and it wasn't uncommon for them to give free upgrades to Express Mail.  But that was long ago.  Now it seems like they really don't care anymore.

I ordered some books, movies and music on December 13th.  Today I checked to see if they had an estimate when my stuff would arrive.

Shipping estimate: January 24, 2008 - February 18, 2008

I ordered 10 items total, all were listed as being "in stock" except two. They've already shipped 4 of the in stock items, they have one of the backordered items listed as shipping (by itself) in early January, and the remaining 4 in stock and 1 back ordered items shipping around February.

If they've already shipped some of the in stock items, why couldn't they have shipped all of them at once? Or ship them with the January item?

If they split them up and shipped some of one batch immediately that were in stock, but held up the in stock items in the other batch, then you're right, their decision tree isn't particularly transparent.
