I guess it wasn't meant to be

We went out to check on the animals this morning.  The first night is always the most difficult.  Alas, the little baby sheep didn't survive the night.  There's no way to know what happened.  There's no sign of injury to the lambs; they appear to have passed away quietly.

The mother is standing over her children, bleating at them.  The father is standing in the doorway, just staring outside.  We're gonna leave the babies there for a little while longer so the mother can grieve and get some closure.

Sorry to hear that. It does happen. We've had them stillborn, and one that strangled herself in a fence when she was two months old, but never lost any in the first day or two after birth if they were alive at birth.
