I've wanted to, and window AC units are ridiculously cheap (under $100). But all the windows in the house are the sideways sliding type, which most window units won't fit in. The only options are to find a window unit that can mount sideways (haven't seen one yet), replace a window (expensive), buy one of those "portable" AC units (expensive AND they take up a lot of space), or install central cooling (which would be wonderful but would also cost an arm and a leg).
And the cost of operating an AC unit is obscene, about 15 cents an hour for a small unit.
I wonder if anyone makes an AC powered by natural gas? I know they make gas powered refridgerators. Gas is WAY cheaper here than electric, I think it's about 80 cents per therm (100,000 BTU or about 100 cubic feet). The thermal equivalent in electric would be about $47!
I think the best (and cheapest) solution is to find a way to ventilate the garage and perhaps hire someone to install some fibreglass blankets in the attic crawlspace.
