ActiveSync 3.x was OK, I never have any major trouble with it. Biggest problem was is you restored your PDA from a backup and didn't delete the partnership, you'd get all kinds of weird duplicates in Outlook. And if you were running Microsoft Money when you did a sync, it would sometimes give incorrect numbers in Pocket Money. Both were problems that were preventable.
4.0 utterly bites. You can no longer sync over the network, it is now permenantly set on continuous sync, you can't specify manual or on connect only, and you can't specify which categories of contacts or appointments to sync, it just grabs everything. It also doesn't appear to work AT ALL with the current version of Avantgo, and doesn't work very well with Microsoft Money. And worst of all, you can only change the settings once the PDA has been connected and synced, so if anything breaks such that it can't complete the sync (like trying to use Avantgo), you can never change the settings to skip the problem area!
