There's an empty 3 gallon water bottle sitting on the porch, which is somewhere around freezing (it's about 18°F outside).  The cold is causing the air inside the bottle to contract.  The cap is just slightly loose, so the air leaking into the bottle is making a noise that sounds almost exactly like a modem handshake.
