Crunchy snow

The snow outside has this weird layer of ice on top now, about 3/4 of an inch thick.  It looks solid enough to stand on, but it isn't.  Whenever you step on a fresh patch, the surface cracks and your foot falls through with a loud crunching noise.

I can hear the dog walking around outside, crunch-crunch-crunch-crunch-crunch-crunch.
