 Original Question: premium data
Question: I recently purchased an HTC EVO 4G.  I'd like to know more about this $10 "premium data" charge.  Exactly what am I getting with this?  What additional services or capabilities will I be receiving that I could not get with my previous smartphone?

Dear Troy Packrat:

Thank you for choosing Sprint. I will be more than happy to assist you with all your Sprint account questions and concerns. To recap what we discussed in our phone conversation the $10 Premium Data plan:

Is Not a charge for 4G service.
Is for unlimited data usage while in 3G/4G Sprint network.
Is for the rich data experience that HTC EVO™ 4G provides whether in 3G or 4G Sprint network.

Dan Hesse put it best when he described the HTC EVO™ 4G experience like going from regular TV to a High Definition TV. Think about when you are in your favorite electronics store looking at the wall of televisions.
You can’t help but be drawn to the high-def plasma screens that are larger than life with images you want to reach out and touch. EVO’s features are custom made for data-loving customers. With a 4.3 inch display, watching a YouTube video, or your favorite show on Hulu has never been better. Just pop out the handy kickstand and watch videos on-the-go. Personal productivity just doubled with two cameras – an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera. Adobe Flash technology ensures that rich Internet content, such as embedded video and animation, display the way they are meant to be seen. These data-rich features are available to HTC EVO™ 4G customers regardless if they are in a 3G or 4G network. Plus faster data speeds if you live in or travel to one of the available 4G markets. Sprint 4G is expected to be available to up to 120 million people across the US by the end of 2010.

Please call us back at 1-877-544-4076 Option 4, or respond to this email if you would lik to discuss this matter further.  Our hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 9am to 8pm EST.  We appreciate your business with Sprint.  Thank you and have a nice day.

Sincerely,

Leigha.A

Oh, that really explains things, doesn't it?   Doesn't it?

They charge you more because you have a better phone. I hate it when they do that. This is why I haven't upgraded my phone. Every time it breaks, I get a cheap replacement on eBay and activate it myself.

So, it's for unlimited 3G/4G and Flash?

... What?

It's not for unlimited 3G, because I had that with the Mogul. And it's not for 4G, since there's no way to opt out of it. And it couldn't be for Flash, because Android 2.1 doesn't do Flash (2.2 will, but it's not available yet (officially) for the Evo.)

Just pop out the handy kickstand and watch videos on-the-go.

There- the new iPhone should have included that little feature (referring to Butterfingers).

Like texting was, like dial-up was, like everything these companies do, it all comes down to 'we're unregulated industries and can do what we want.'

I'd just respond with "'Nothing' would have been a more concise response, and wasted less of my time and yours."
