So if the front AND back of the iPhone 4 are made of glass, and there's a smooth stainless steel band around the sides, how the heck are you supposed to hold onto it, especially if your hands are slippery/wet/sweaty/greasy/etc?

It's a fashion accessory, not a phone.
You are only supposed to put it on display to the awe-stuck public with dry-cleaned professionally manicured hand-model hands.

Or... I think there is a wide range of wallet-style leather cases available, so you don't ever have to physically touch any part of the phone except the touch screen.

the general idea is to house it in a protective case.
but that holds true of any smartphone with a large screen, since NO factory warranty covers broken screens.
