Invasion of the Giant Mosquitos!

I've been seeing these HUGE bugs gathering around the front porch light lately. They're about 2 inches long and look like giant mosquitos. Scary to say the least.

I found out today they're actually the harmless crane fly. They don't bite or sting or suck blood or anything. They just look creepy, like a daddy long legs.

We get 'em about 1/4 as commonly as houseflies on the east coast. They're big and scary, but just annoying. They leave a big smear when smushed. Mostly legs.

We always called them mosquito eaters back home, wonder what they eat. Mosquito is a funny word ^^

*chuckles* Yeah, there's one buzzing around my workstation now, or at least there was a few minutes ago. He'll be back, no doubt. They seem attracted to the static on my CRT monitor. Anyway, thanks for that link. Those insects are extremely common here on the far northwest coast of CA, but I never knew their real name until now...

Maybe they went to tell there friends about the monitor so they can buzz around it too :) ps what's a crt monitor? is that the same os the one that shows what your computer displayed like pictures and stuff?

CRT stands for cathode ray tube. It's the big, bulky old-style computer monitor that's like a television, as opposed to those sleek, sexy flat panels that everyone seems to have now except me. ;-)

I remember when i was little and we used to go camping there was these weird bugs on the water of the lake that was there. i remember those was on creeks too when i was little.sorta like spiders called water skippers. i wonder how they walk on the water without falling in and getting wet? I remember also these bugs called lace wings there sorta like big mosquitoes too. I think some of them was green too. like a funny green mosquito :) anyways after i read you post that made me remember that stuff :) hehe.

Will those SWAT teams get rid of buggies and swat them :)? hehe i kid i just saw SWAT teams mentioned on that modern marvels on the history channel listed on yahoo tv listings and it made me think of the mosquito posts you posed i dunno why :)
