Why is it that even with Splenda, diet colas still taste like diet cola?

I bought a bottle of Diet Rite recently, since it was now made with Splenda, but it still tasted just as bad as ever. I just bought a bottle of Diet Coke with Splenda, hoping the they'd have improved the taste, but no, it doesn't taste anything even remotely like Coke.

Why can't anyone make a diet soda that actually tastes like the non-diet version?

Because, unfortunately...there's never going to actually be a -real- substitute for sugar that looks, tastes, and acts actually like sugar. Splenda is made from sugar...but it doesn't work the same way, which is why some recipes recommend half sugar/half Splenda.

That's a weird icon. I find myself not reading the bottom line. Foxes creme... mmm, yes they do. ;-)

Why can't anyone make a diet soda that actually tastes like the non-diet version?

Why can't anyone make piping hot coffee that tastes exactly like drinking cold refreshing freshly squeezed orange juice? ;-)

Myself, I have the opposite reaction. Whenever someone slips me a non-diet pop, I find it too syrupy and I don't like that anymore.
Besides, you can't really wash down a meal with a sugary drink, because that leaves a sugary residue in your mouth. Bad for your teeth and your breath.

A few years ago, my grandparents bought a box of Foxes Creme wafer cookies. It's an actual product, and I still have a couple packages left. They came in vanilla and chocolate. I haven't seen them since, and Google hasn't really helped any. I have come across references to "Foxes Biscuits", so perhaps it is a British thing.

Heh. CocaCola hasn't tasted right since they changed from cane sugar to corn sugar way back in the 70s some time.

Making everything with crappy corn syrup is a US thing, though. We have everything made with real sugar here in Europe. Want me to send you some real Coca Cola?

Thanks for the offer, but the shipping would be a killer. Use of corn sweetener does have an economic logic to it, but the economics are also driven by politics. Cane sugar comes from countries that the US cut off from its economic support policies back then, mostly for their leftist political leanings. Corn is a major US product, though in fact beet sugar can be grown here too.

I've actually been fairly impressed with the advances in diet cola technology over the last few years. You do have to accept that the diet versions of various sodas don't taste much like the "real thing", but once you grant that many of them are at least "pleasent" to drink. Unlike, say, "TAB".

Diet Rite actually makes a darn good float with low-carb ice cream. ;^>
