Those are salt evaporation ponds. A species of brine shrimp that thrives in concentrated salt environments is responsible for the red color.

I'd second that, and even make the wild guess before looking that this is the Southern end of the San Francisco Bay.

You can see your house from the satelighte :)? sorta looked like a puzzle too. ps neat gadget icon :)looks like google has a mapquest too. ps the word puzzle made me think of the popples they a puzzle too, i liked puff ball it was a fun cartoon. i used to be able to do putters voice (Putter sounded like bert raccoon) and a few other voices of the popples but i haven't tried to do there voices since the 1980's hehe.
