With spring comes the return of what I call the Car Alarm Birds.  They have a call that sounds almost exactly like a car alarm:  whooooop whooooop whooooop whooooop   peeew peeew peeew peeew.

March 11th I complained about it snowing.  Two days ago (April 1) it hit (at least) 88°F here.  The grass is mostly green and will probably need to be mowed by next weekend.  I've even seen a few speedwell flowers popping up amid the grass.

The frogs along the creek are making an incredible racket at night.

I haven't seen any bunnies lately (though something keeps nibbling at the vegetable scraps I put out, and it's not the goats), but my SO says he saw a squirrel running off with a mouse in its mouth.  Weird.

Snow away

We got about an inch of snow Friday night.  Saturday morning when we headed out to do our weekly shopping, the ground was completely white.  The high temperature for the day was near freezing, and the sky was hazy all afternoon.  But by the time we got home that evening, the snow had completely melted.

We really don't need any more precipitation.  The ground is extremely muddy around here, and many of the area rivers are at or above flood stage.  The Hydrologic Information Center website says that 174 gauges are reporting flooding, with 22 reporting major flooding.  Another 136 gauges are near flood stage.  The Missouri River at Omaha is reporting 27.6 feet; the flood stage is 29 feet.  At Brownville, the Missouri has reached 37.3 feet and is rising; at 38 feet the Cooper Nuclear Power Plant begins flooding preparations.

Fortunately the forecast appears to be dry for the week ahead, with temps in the 50s.

So much for any hope of getting my car out of the garage.

Yesterday, most of the snow had melted.  The only remaining snow was some of the giant drifts, and even those were rapidly shrinking into nothingness.  The driveway was extremely muddy and I could see some considerable erosion in the neighbor's cornfields.  The grass was just beginning to turn green again and the sheep were tentatively grazing.

This morning, however, I was greeted with a sea of white.  It started raining yesterday evening and turned to snow overnight.  It's a very wet, sticky snow so there's no drifting.  Some of the flakes are enormous, more like snowballs than snowflakes.  It looks like we got about 1-1/2 to 2 inches so far and it's still coming down.

The forecast calls for snow from now through Saturday.  They claim there will be little or no accumulation, but that's what they originally said about today.

Snowmelt

There is so much snow and it's all starting to melt at once that the little waterfall in the creek just south of here is absolutely roaring.

The snow has melted enough that we've been able to let the sheep and goats out of the barn.  The goats have lost a bit of their tameness, but they're quickly remembering that I'm the good guy.  I'm going to need to retrain them to dance on their hind legs for treats.  The ram is more affectionate than ever; he's absolutely just the sweetest thing now.

There's still over a foot of snow on my side of the garage.  That area is shaded by the woods, so it'll probably be weeks before I can use my car again.  It's been trapped in the garage since December!

I'm even beginning to see traces of green in the grass.  It'll be nice to have the sheep back on grass instead of feeding them expensive alfalfa.

The weather is finally starting to warm.  It's up into the 40's and there are patches of bare ground beginning to appear.  It's still well below freezing at night (it got down to about 10°F last night), so things are starting to get rather icy.  The forecast calls for temps to get into the 50's by Monday, but the Climate Prediction Center is forecasting below average temperatures in their 8-14 day and one month outlooks.

My car has been trapped in the garage for over 3 months now.  There's still a considerable depth of snow in front of the door, so even with these warmer temps, it will likely still be weeks before it's clear, and even longer before the mud dries out enough to actually drive through.

April 5th and it snowed.  We didn't get much here; most of it melted by the time I got up, though there was some snow accumulation between the rows in the soybean field behind the house.  Some places north of us got as much as 6 or 7 inches.

50% chance of snow forecast for this Friday.  WTF?

Spring is here!  Finally, there are colors besides brown, gray and white.

March 1st was the snowstorm of the decade, with a snowdrift across the driveway over 5 feet deep.

Today, the 13th, the temperature got up 80ºF, a new record for this date.  The last few patches of snow that were hanging on this morning were gone by the afternoon.  The only remaining snow is the huge pile made by the snow plow, which has gone from 8 or 9 feet high to a mere foot and a half.

The driveway has begun to dry out, though the lawn and the area I normally park is a total swamp.  It probably won't dry out for at least a couple weeks.

Temperatures are expected to drop the rest of the week into the 40's, which is still better than a couple weeks ago.

The temperatures have been well above freezing the past several days, with temps getting up to 55ºF (27ºC) Wednesday.  Most of the snow has melted, with only the deepest drifts still remaining.  The driveway, which was impassable last Friday, slush Tuesday and a river Wednesday was pretty well dried out by Thursday afternoon.

Naturally, that means it's going to snow this weekend.  There's a Winter Storm Watch for this Saturday and the forecast is calling for 6 inches or more of snow along with strong winds which will likely create huge drifts in the driveway again.  Looks like I'll be stuck here yet again.

Anywho, here's some pics:

Most of the slush in the driveway has melted, but now it's turning into a creek from all the meltwater.  The ground is so saturated that the gravel feels spongy under my feet.  I'm surprised just how much the snow has melted in the past couple days.

Yesterday

Today

It was just a week ago we had so much snow that the driveway had to be plowed, and it was just Friday that blowing snow made the driveway impassable again.

Today, temps were into mid 40's with the temperature last night staying above freezing.  The driveway is a morass of slush.  I made the mistake of attempting to step onto a snow bank on the side of the drive; it turned out to be all slush and now my pants cuffs are soaking wet.

It forecast calls for temps in the low 50's for the rest of the week.  Looks like winter is finally dying.  Hopefully all this nasty snow will be gone in a few days.  Though I don't know which is more depressing, the entire world being white or the entire world being brown.  At least my car doesn't get stuck in brown.

How deep the snow was a few days ago.

Same snow bank today, now nothing but slush.

Things are changing from white to brown.
