I stopped in a local bike shop to get an idea of prices. Good God, they are insane!!! I was hoping to be able to buy a bike for $200-250 or so. Not a chance. The cheapest they had was $400, and the average price was $2000-3000!!!

Umm, no. I could buy a brand new Honda scooter for less than that.

All I want is BASIC transportation. Something to go about 8 miles to/from work. I don't need a titanium frame, I don't need magnesium wheels, I don't need 100 gears, I don't need a racing or mountain or BMX bike. Just something to hop on and pedal off, like I used to do when I was in school.

Guess I'm going to have to look into maybe buying a used scooter or something.

What about Target, Costco, etc?

They have bikes.

I didn't think about Costco. I'll have to check that out.

The warehouse stores near me usually have a couple of models, not a huge selection but they have them.

Couldn't hurt.

You'd be able to get a bike for under $100 at target

And that's about as many yards as you'll be able to pedal it before it breaks down.

My mate just got one there for $55, its pretty nice. Its functional, much better than my old bike, and you dont have to worry too much about it being stolen or vandelised. Go check it out for yourself some time.

You could always buy one from K-Mart or some department store. Bear in mind, however, Rigel's dad bought one from there and spends more time fixing it than he does riding it.

Depends what you mean by insane?

About the cheapest new motorcycle is the Suzuki GN250, they'd be about $US2000 new I guess. They've been made since the 1980s, so you can get one used half that price or less.

I think your mistake was looking in a bicycle shop. They normally cater to the sports enthusiast and the status seeker. Instead, have a look at what's available from places like Target or Wal-Mart, or perhaps from a sporting goods store or discount outlet (Costco? Sam's Club? Dunno what you have out there.) Or check for the used bicycle auctions or sales usually held by police departments who need to get rid of unclaimed items every now and then. Garage sales are a possible source too.

If you want more flexibility, for a few hundred dollars more you can get an electrically-assisted bicycle that can give you extra range (and still let you turn the boost off when you want more exercise). :)
